While character balance and a completely revamped story mode have been two primary focuses, Sakurai has just revealed that one major battle strategy known as edge camping (or edge guarding) will no longer be a viable tactic. This revelation arrived during the January 22, 2014 update and was further elaborated upon by Sakurai in a post in Nintendo’s MiiVerse.
The series’ creator then continued:
By taking air time and accumulated damage into consideration, Sakurai has completely eliminated the heavily used edge guard maneuver — effectively altering the strategies of many hardcore players in the process. While some longtime players will understandably be upset by the news, it does open up the possibilities for some new gameplay options and should make fights much more interesting.
Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge. Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage. "
There’s still plenty of additional information that Sakurai has yet to reveal in regards to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, but that information should be arriving soon given that the games are scheduled to launch this year. In the meantime, stay tuned to Game Rant for additional information.
What do you think about the removal of ledge camping? What other gameplay changes would you like to see in the new Super Smash Bros.?
